What is Depression and How Does Faith in Christ Help?
Depression affects millions of people around the world. It can cause hopelessness, but faith in Christ can provide spiritual healing. It can help them overcome difficult times during depression.
In this article, we’ll discuss how scriptures, Christian counseling, and spiritual deliverance can help depression.
So, let’s begin and see how faith battles and defeats depression, and it never fails if one believes.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. – Hebrews 11:1, NKJV
A Biblical Perspective on Dealing with Depression & Finding Hope
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. – Psalm 34:17, NKJV
If a person is experiencing feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness, or hopelessness…
The Bible provides one with scriptures that provide an abundance of comfort, and of course, hope when experiencing depression.
Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. – 1 Peter 5:7, NKJV
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33, NKJV
Depression can be an overwhelming life experience.
However, the scriptures that were previously mentioned offer words of guidance and encouragement on how to deal with depression.
Also, those verses reveal how the Lord is always with a depressed individual throughout their journey.
With a little faith, prayer, and God’s Word, one can rise and discover hope in their darkest hour.
Other Practical Ways of Overcoming Depression
Christian Counseling
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10, NKJV
If someone is experiencing anxiety, agitation, restlessness, or even having feelings of worthlessness or guilt…
Another believer or the church community can provide guidance and support that can help a depressed person overcome it.
Christian counseling is a wide category of relationship and emotional support using the principles of Christianity to help believers cope with life challenges.
Because a believer’s faith can play a significant role in an individual’s life, many therapy clients who identify as a Christian feel more comfortable seeing a counselor who shares beliefs and discusses their faith openly and without judgment.
The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. – Proverbs 12:18, NIV
Spiritual Deliverance
And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea. – Mark 5:13, NKJV
If someone is experiencing a reduced appetite and weight loss or increased cravings for food and weight gain…
Then there are believers in Christ who can deliver that person from depression.
However, unfortunately, a lot of churches today do not preach about healing or even practice it.
But Pastor Jim Baker, who has a church called Zion Christian Fellowship, in Powell, Ohio, believes and practices it.
Jim Baker did a great sermon on deliverance. He said that you cannot be a believer unless you believe in raising the dead.
Of course, that’s Christianity: that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. – Romans 10:9 NKJV
Jim said his church has seen over a dozen people raised from the dead.
He believes it’s always God’s will to heal you; Christ died on the cross for your healing.
However, I’ve never been to Jim’s church, but I believe in the deliverance ministry.
If you ever experience depression, then find and visit a local church that can cast it out. But, first, you have to believe.
The Praying Medic’s solution
If someone is experiencing anger, outbursts, irritability, or frustration, even over small matters…
Maybe Praying Medic’s book titled Emotional Healing in 3 Easy Steps. (The Kingdom of God Made Simple) can help with their depression issues.
Who is Praying Medic? He’s a believer in Christ, author, and former paramedic. Since 2009, he has written about the miracles God has done through his ministry.
His book blurb reads:
“If you’ve been through counseling, prayer, or deliverance, but you’re still plagued with painful emotions like shame, guilt, fear or anger, this book can help you get free of those emotions once and for all.
This isn’t another nice-sounding, but powerless self-help book. It’s not filled with pop-psychology. It’s a field-tested method of erasing traumatic wounds in your soul and releasing the painful emotions associated with them. And it doesn’t require long hours of prayer or counseling.
You can do it yourself and it will only take a few minutes. If you’re ready to ditch your emotional baggage, put your past behind you, and get off the emotional roller-coaster you’ve been riding, you’re just 30 minutes away from a new you. Are you ready?”
This book has excellent Amazon reviews, and prayerfully, it will be a blessing to someone who has depression.
In summary
Hopefully, I provided options to help depression: scriptures, Christian counseling, and spiritual deliverance.
However, a healing of the mind can never happen if one does not believe.
It starts with prayer and believing that healing will take place, then the healing will take place.
Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. – Mark 11:24
