Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” — Genesis 25:31, ESV.
This is Kevin William Rascoe, and welcome to my weekly devotional/blog.
In my lifetime, I’ve discovered that impatience can produce tremendous mental and physical pain.
In sports, a teammate can move too soon and cause an interception or a stolen ball; even being impatient in traffic can cause an accident and physically alter your life.
Esau swapped his birthright for instant gratification.
“The birthright gave the firstborn son the rights of a double blessing. By selling his birthright, Esau gives up the family blessing of the firstborn son.” — The Perry Stone Study Bible.
Much of today’s society has a microwaveable mindset; we want things before God can give them, and with that attitude, we miss godly opportunities, and regret usually follows.
Of course, God’s way is the best way of life, but we must slow down and wait on Him, so we don’t miss the blessings designed specifically for us.
Esau made an emotional, hasty decision and missed out on his inheritance. Later, he felt the pain and cried out when he learned his brother had received his blessing.
If you desire something, examine it to make sure you are not trying to make it happen outside of God’s will and timing, because impatience can put your blessing into someone else’s hands.
Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me. — Ps. 119:133, ESV.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, sometimes, we think we can see further than You can and move outside Your timing and will, so we ask for forgiveness. We see how much Esau missed out on, so from now on, we will align our steps with Your Word, pace, and promises. We’ll remember that You can do far more than we can ever ask or imagine, but within Your time; in Jesus Christ’s precious name, we pray. Amen.
Until next time, God bless!
If you haven’t accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior and repented of your sins, then do so now because there is no guarantee you’ll have another opportunity tomorrow (Rom. 10:9-10).
